Uniformity in the Training Program for Cleaning Employees

By:  Cathy Green

While teaching a new employee last week the uniform manner in which I want toilets cleaned, it occurred to me that my more experienced cleaning techs may never have seen my updated method.  So I taught them also and now every one has a uniform, very hygienic way in which they clean toilets on behalf of this company.

Then, while teaching that same employee the way that I want kitchens cleaned for this company, it occurred to me that I need to teach all of my employees the updated way that I want kitchens cleaned, the order and the supplies/products; otherwise, there will be no uniformity in the way in which kitchens are cleaned.

The reason I realized that I needed to establish a uniform way to clean kitchens was after a SECOND client told me that no one is as thorough in cleaning kitchens than I am.  In other words, when I am in a home teaching, they love my method of cleaning a kitchen.

When I’m not there and the employee cleans, the job is not as good.  That was  not good news and I blame myself for that—-as the responsibility is upon me, the owner, to ensure that they all are doing the job BETTER than I ever could.

Two clients in two different areas of Maryland who do not know each other made that same comment.  That let me know that I needed to teach ALL my employees my particular method of kitchen cleaning so that there would be uniformity.

And while I’m at it, I’m going to sit down and work out a uniform way to clean every other room of houses.  No, I will not look at or use anyone else’s video tapes or training methods. I’m creating my own.

What about you?  Have you started to experiment with cleaning methods and uniform ways in which you want rooms in homes cleaned?  If not, do that.  It will take your business to another level.  And ultimately, you as the owner is responsible for your business and its growth/progress.

Employees are more self assured and confident when they are trained.  They feel empowered when trained.  Let’s face it, cleaning a house can be intimidating and overwhelming. It’s great to be armed with the proper supplies, products and skills to do a terrific  job.

I’m also working with an employee who will soon be promoted to supervisor/trainer.  He’s really good and my goal is for him to do the training in the future.

In short, I’m going to perfect my training program, teach it to him and have him teach new employees that come on board.  I’ve even given a name to my training.  It’s called the UpperCrust Cleaning Academy.

Yipee!  Exciting.

I’ll keep you all updated as the Academy progresses.
